Film Proposal

For the proposal of United, it was hard to describe what exactly the film was about because at the start i was still convinced I may be doing a film about eating disorders and didn't even know if Untitled had a plot yet.

Film Proposal

Synopsis
'Untitled' follows a woman through her journey with loneliness. Throughout the whole film you never see her face, she is a figure in all black who is everywhere yet nowhere at the same time. Untitled shows the battles that agoraphobic people have with the outside world that isn't in their safe space. The main character called 'Girl' sticks out from society, feeling numb and standing still, she alienates herself, why her movements are extremely limited. She mostly enjoys watching people, which is what she is seen doing throughout the whole film, while she appears in many places. The film is an art house genre and doesn't really follow any certain plot.

The Logline.
The film doesn't depend on a script, instead it is purely without dialogue, the only sounds are ambient sounds in the background to show the differentiation in where 'Girl' is. Not using a script means that the character as a whole serves as a statement, as she is a darkly dressed and sad character among pretty and bright things.

Screenplay Structure.
'Untitled' doesn't have a set structure, in fact, each scene set up follows the same format which is a shot of the location without 'Girl', then she appears into the shot, doing whatever she appears to be whether it is sitting on a bench, laying on a field, stood against a tree. This format allows us to show just how much 'Girl' stands out as an abnormal presence in the serene and quiet nature of the locations she is in. She sticks out and almost plagues the pretty atmosphere with her drab and depressing presence.

Characters
'Girl' is our main character, she is the only actual character in the whole film, she, much like the film does not have a name because in the grand scheme of the world she is not important. The world will still go on without her, therefore throughout the whole film she has no lines or any actual movement or interactions with anyone because people do not think she is worth the time. 'Girl' only wears black throughout all the films, the use of this is to make her stand out that bit more than if she were to wear brighter colours and patterns against some of the locations we have picked.

Film Treatment.
'Girl' appears to not have a face as she is never seen facing the camera, we meet her in a field which is next to a children's park which is the opposite of her whole aesthetic as a character. It shows some link she has to a childhood she never really had, which can be inferred by the audience to make it easier for the characters actresses past to be accessed and even sympathised with. She always is seen not exactly moving and appearing in rather random places, such as the field, where she violently sticks out amongst the bright green field, the whole film just follows her general exclusion from society. She doesn’t interact with any characters in the film as she is the only person in the film, being the only character gives her another sense of loneliness, apart from the barren landscape. The film first starts in a field, where there is no one, ‘Girl’ isn’t to be seen anywhere as we haven’t been introduced to her, after the long shot it cuts to where we can see her, standing far away in the distance of the field, doing nothing and being surrounded in an very open area.

In Scene 2, the beach scene, we see a sea where it is large, stormy and grey, it looks barren and miserable, which is the main location. It is the home of two scenes, the beach scene and the bench scene I chose the location because it is so dark and depressing, which fits our main character. Our main character is absent before 'Girl' is seen sitting on a bench as she wind batters her. The second part of the scene, a long shot of a wall overlooking the sea before she appears standing with her back to the camera looking at the sea. She is just watching the sea, before disappearing from the shot, it is going back to the sea which is very unlike the typical structure I have built for the scenes.

In scene three, the appearances and disappearances start becoming more irate, she isn't where she is supposed, showing she is not supposed to be allowed in society. Hence why she is moving all over the place. We see her appear all over a wall, sitting on it, laying upside down on it and moving with each shot. Until, in scene four, we see all the previous locations, no one is there it's empty, she's gone back home, where we see her standing in the hallway, she walks into a room and the film is finished.

Target Audience

I aim for my audience to be those who are struggling with their own mental health issues and appreciate the representation in the film as they feel that ‘ Girl’ is someone that they can relate to and that gives them the representation that is lacking in a positive or understanding light in the media. The art house style also is popular with those who want to support upcoming artists and directors, much how Kristen Stuart was found to play Bella in Twilight, before that she had starred in many different indie movies. The uniqueness of the film comes from its lack of plot, lack of dialogue and overall structure, it doesn’t follow any typical fim tropes and sets its own to stick out from the crowd.
